flashback October 2006

Today the news is threatening some snow, mostly out in the southern tier. Those words bring back some worries. It is 3 years ago almost to the day that the surprise October storm hit us. A storm that kept us without power for 10 days, eating cold cheese sandwiches, cuddling with blankets, and using our imagination by candle light.
The saddest moments flood back though. I remember just bursting into tears on day 2 as we struggled to clear all of the beautiful branches to the 80 year old trees in our yard. You wake everyday to Gods beauty, you often fail to see it, in fact we cursed it at times ( leaf raking can be a chore). It is moments like the storm that you realize natural beauty should be cherished.
The trees are slowly being replaced, Re-tree western NY a volunteer organization is working hard to replace 30,000 trees. To date they have planted 11,200! Funding is falling, as is the memory of our loss. The memory loses its potency with time, other more pressing calamities have fallen, and our economy has as well. I hope the group is successful though, because even though neither Paul or I will be able to appreciate the beauty, some day someone else with stare up at the huge oak, maple, or elm tree and be awed by its size, age and beauty
